The Author's Guide to ARC Campaigns

In 2026, ARC campaigns are no longer optional, they’re a necessity. Luckily, you don’t need a huge budget or big name – you just need a good strategy. ARCs are how you make sure you’re on the radar before your book even launches.

What is an ARC?

An ARC (advanced reader copy) is an early, free copy of your book sent to readers in exchange for an honest review. The goal of an ARC campaign is to create hype and visibility before your official launch date- it is a form of marketing. A book with no reviews on launch day is difficult for readers to find. A book with 20 reviews on day one is visible and credible.

Why ARCs are important for indie authors:

The internet is a busy place. Hundreds of books are released every day. Indie authors rely heavily on community (which we love!) but they also do not have the reach that traditional publishers have. ARCs are the marketing solution for indie authors to create further reach and strengthen community.

How ARCs work:

An author or an arc campaign manager will open up sign-ups via their socials. Usually the sign-up is a Google form or a page on the author’s website. Either way, an email list is then created of readers who match the traits of the intended audience. Readers are mostly found on Instagram, Tiktok or other socials, where they can share their opinions and review of the title before or on day of release.

How many ARC readers do you need?

Aim for 20-50 confirmed reviews. On average 30-50% of ARCs sent will convert into a posted review. So, if you want 20 reviews, send out 40-50 ARCs. Those who do not post may still contribute via word of mouth, so don’t feel discouraged if not everyone posts! Even 10 reviews on launch day can make an impact.

Suggested ARC timeline

Typically, a campaign lasts about 4-6 weeks before launch day

6 weeks from launch: Finalise your script and format your ARC version (ebook/ kindle supported file).

5 weeks to go: Build your reader list and send/post sign-up form.

4 weeks left: Send ARCs out. One month allows readers enough time to read, review and post.

3 weeks: Send reminder/nudge to readers to read and review.

2 weeks: Final reminder. Send links to goodreads and storygraph page.

Launch week (yay!): Readers post day of and leading up to launch.

Reviews from readers:

Readers are required to disclose they were gifted your book in exchange for an honest review. Readers cannot be forced to write a positive review.
