5 Reasons Readers Will Quit Your Book Before Finishing the First Chapter
There was a phenomenon I witnessed many times while working in a bookstore. A potential reader would pick up a book, read the first and maybe second page then put the book down. It made me wonder; what are some of the reasons someone loses interest in a book after just a few pages. Here's what my research shows:

You don’t have a gripping hook
We already know a good first line is important in a novel. The few lines thereafter are just as important in my opinion. A wow first line might get your prospective buyer to the second line but what’s bringing them to the third or fourth? On your first page you need to convince the reader that your story is worth investing in. Better yet, your whole first chapter needs to entice your reader.
No inciting Incident
Related to the above issue, no clear inciting incident in the first few paragraphs prevents your reader from staying invested. This incident is what sets your plot in motion – what disrupts the protagonists daily life? What is the whole reason for this story in the first place?
Too much information at once
Nobody enjoys information overload. Too much too quickly can confuse your reader and make them feel overwhelmed. Minimize world building and background to what is essential for your opening scene. Focus on actions and direct information to the scene, background can come later.
No mystery or high stakes
A lack of mystery will disengage your reader quickly. Give just enough information to make the reader curious. This relates to your inciting incident and makes a reader ask why, who or when?
Unlike-able narrator/character
Now not every character will be bubbly, funny or a ray of sunshine. Your character does however need some redeeming quality. Are they smart, witty or determined? Your reader needs to root for your character from the start to keep them reading. Be sure to make your character's problem's, fears and goals clear to the reader.
All these can be taken into account in just your first chapter. You know your story is worth reading but your readers are the ones who must be convinced.
